Implied volatility is one of the most important concepts to understand as an options trader. Implied volatility represents the option prices on a particular stock, which is an indication of the future stock price movements that the market is expecting. Stocks with more expensive option prices have higher implied volatility, indicating larger expected price changes in the future. On the other hand, stocks with cheaper option prices have lower implied volatility, indicating smaller expected price changes in the future. Additionally, implied volatility can be used to calculate the one standard deviation expected stock price ranges over any time frame. ---- Ultra-Competitive Commissions. Volatility VS Liquidity for Traders covering a hugely important topic. www.envisionchart.com Hi Traders, we are going over a key trading subject where we talk about volatility vs liquidity in the market, and how volatility trading is something that can only really be done by home traders who do not need to place large amounts of trades because you have to start to worry about slippage in the market when there is a lack of market liquidity. Traders often mis interpret this topic where they think that volume in trades is the same as market liquidity. They are separate in that liquidity is based on if you are actually able to make trades at a certain price level. There may often be high volume, but low liquidity. In the video volatility vs liquidity, we break down exactly what is liquidity and what does market liquidity mean. It doesn't matter if you are trading stocks, futures, or forex, volatility vs liquidity is a key concept in all of these markets as you have to be able to find a opposing side to every trade that you take (even if many of us are actually trading against our brokers, but that's a different topic in itself). Traders who understand the basics of each market are setting themselves up for a more successful, not just stint, but career in trading when they understand each and every topic relevant to their market. In a low volatility environment the distribution curve is narrow and tall. This makes your 1 standard deviation range much tighter than in a high IV environment. So when we sell 1 SD OTM premium, we take on more risk for less return. This is part one of this great series! Check out our archives for the rest: https://www.tastytrade.com/tt/shows/MT

Find out if extending your duration is a viable strategy to make up for a lack of volatility when Implied Volatility Rank is low! See more trading videos: http://bit.ly/10rdl8V When Implied Volatility (IV) is low, our probability of profit is typically lower than periods of high IV. However due to the relationship of volatility and time, is there anyway that we can change our desired timeframe for entering a trade to compensate for the low volatility? Today, Tom Sosnoff and Tony Battista cover this exact topic. Since low IV is coming back into the market, the guys first explain the time/volatility relationship. They find out that you need to multiply the volatility by the square root of two in order to calculate the desired days to expiration, when looking for the same expected move. After they find this out, Tom and Tony look at a study that compares selling a longer term Strangle versus 3 shorter term Strangles when IV is low. They find out that it is viable to extend your duration in order to make up for the lack of volatility! ======== tastytrade.com ======== Finally a financial network for traders, built by traders. Understanding implied volatility skew can help us understand where the perceived risk lies, based on option prices. When puts are trading for more than equidistant calls, there is a normal volatility skew. When calls are trading for more than equidistant puts, there is a reverse volatility skew. Do this once a week to find a handful of volatile stocks for day trading which are likely to be volatile throughout the week. Whole process takes about 20 minutes...no more researching every day for volatile stocks for day trading. With this method you find stocks which are likely to produce big moves every day, for about a week (sometimes longer, but update your list each week). Here are resources discussed in the video: Written version of this video: How to Find Volatile Stocks for Day Trading in 20 Minutes or Less - http://vantagepointtrading.com/archives/14487 Before the market open Tuesday I will publish a list of "Day Trading Stock Picks for the Week" on http://vantagepointtrading.com under the Stock Trading category: http://vantagepointtrading.com/archives/category/market-blog These volatile stock for day trading (picks) will be based on the method(s) described in the video, and screened for on http://stockfetcher.com. Reasons I like these types of volatile stocks for day trading is covered in: Increase Profits and Cut Your Day Trading Work Load with This High Volatility Stock Screen (http://vantagepointtrading.com/archives/6104) Strategies you may opt to use for trading these volatile day trading stocks include: How to Day Trade Stocks in 2 Hours or Less: http://vantagepointtrading.com/archives/16708 Truncated Price Swing Trading Strategy for Stocks or Forex ( http://vantagepointtrading.com/archives/1883 ) Trend Trading: How to Spot Trading Opportunities ( http://vantagepointtrading.com/archives/12318 ) Daily Range Day Trading Strategy ( http://vantagepointtrading.com/archives/4323 ) How to Day Trade Forex in 2 Hours or Less (applies to stocks as well) http://vantagepointtrading.com/archives/14162 Trading volatile stocks isn't for everyone. Have a plan for how you will trade them, and test out your strategy before live trading. Slippage is very likely in these stocks. This isn't an endorsement of these stocks, as the stocks on the list will change weekly. This method is just one option for finding volatile stocks for day trading, if you don't want to be constantly researching.
